Announcements:
  • STAAR Practice Tests: The reading test is done!  The kids survived, but they now realize how long a STAAR test really takes. The STAAR Ready Math Test (practice test) is Monday. Please, make sure your child comes to school on Monday on time, with a HEALTHY snack, water bottle, and well rested. I will email you either Monday or Tuesday with your child's STAAR scores from both practice tests. At that point I will assess who needs additional support and provide tutoring after school for those students.

  • February 29th: STAAR Ready Test - Math (practice STAAR test)
  • March 2: Early Release, Dr. Seuss's Birthday, and Read-In Day!
  • March 8: Economics Fair (all 35 - 40 products due)

In Reading, we started back up with Informational (nonfiction) text. We read a PBL related article "City Critters" in Scholastic News. We got a chance to visit the library and check in and out books (we were unable to last week due to early release day). We are also going back and reviewing various reading strategies (ways in which we can comprehend what we read) using informational text. Last but not least, Mr. Weiler came back as a special guest teacher and continued to help us create a PBL (Save Brushy Creek) Powtoon. Our goal is to have our Powtoons done by the end of next week.

In Writing, we spent time looking at written work to find revising and editing corrections. There will be a revising and editing test next week on Thursday, February 25th. Along with revising and editing, we will go back and review some writing conventions.  Next week, we will learn how to identify and use "Verbs" in their various tenses (past, present, future). We also started writing our Informational writing piece. The kids selected an endangered animal from the habitat in which they researched. We used books from the library as our research resource in completing most of our graphic organizer (subtopics and details). We'll use the laptops to research further using World Book and Britannica. This will be an ongoing writing piece for the next couple of weeks.

In Math, we are back in to the thick of it with multiplication and division!  This time our focus will be on 3's, 6's, 7's and 9's facts. Each day this week, we started our math time with a fun multiplication game. This was a great way to "warm up" our brains. We played in partners, groups of 3's and groups of 4's. What can kids do at home to practice their math skills??? One suggestion is to go to www.multiplication.com.  Or try our new fun and exciting math program called Think Through Math!  This awesome individualized math program can be done at home as well as at school. Our test on this unit will be next Thursday, February 25.

In Science, we started our new unit, Weather and the Water Cycle. We did a compare and contrast of the weather in two Texas cities, Round Rock and Amarillo. We used our laptops and completed a few tasks on weather using  the STEMscopes program: picture vocabulary, reading in science with comprehension questions, and an interactive investigation weather game. We also brainstormed what we already knew about the water cycle using a new site called Popplet.com.

In Social Studies, we are in deep into our Economics Unit. We learned about "goods" and "services" and their differences. Information about the Economics Fair went home last week.  Ask your child about the Economics Fair Check Sheet (with due dates).  This sheet is in your child's Passport folder. The kids will need to start working on their product at home.  The Fair is March 8th.
