In writing, we picked one of our favorite poems we have written this year. Revised and edited it. We'll write our final draft next week. We also have our Poetry Test on Tuesday next week.

In reading, we continued to read many types of poetry. The read a funny poem called "The Marrog" and did a visualization of the poem in our reading journals. We also read a narrative poem called "Buying a Puppy". This was an inferring assignment. We did the first half of the poem as a class, the second half was done independently. This was a graded assignment. We also did a "practice" poetry reading comprehension assignment (similar to the test on Tuesday) as a class today. The kids did quite well on it too!

In math, we wrapped up our multiplication unit on Thursday with the test. We'll start fractions next week!

In science, we wrapped up our forms of energy unit with a test today. We'll start our next unit, natural resources next week.

In social studies, we focused on the work "Empathy" and what it means to be empathetic towards others. We did an activity on Padlet.

We had fun with our kinder buddies today. We used cut apples to "stamp" orange pumpkins on craft paper. Then, had fun creating a fall scene with tissue paper, pipe cleaners and fall leaves.

Class Happenings:
In writing, we are still in our poetry unit. The kids learned about narrative poetry (poems that tell a story with characters, setting and a plot). They got a chance to write their own narrative poem about getting ready for school.  Then, we explored sensory poems (poems that describe using our 5 senses). They wrote their own senses poem about an object (food item, toy, etc).

In reading, we continued to read many types of poetry. The read two narrative poems, "The Great Frog Race" and "Emilio Emilio". As a class we discussed "The Great Frog Race" and identified the character, setting, plot, problem and solution. Then, they worked with their reading partner to do the same task with the poem, "Emilio Emilio". We also listened to a lyrical poem (song poem), Roar by Katy Perry. The kids found tons of figurative language in the poem (similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, rhyme and repetition patterns).

In math, we are in deep into multiplication!  The kids have learned to use number lines, arrays, charts/tables, and equal groups to represent a multiplication problem. Then, we use repeated addition and skip counting to find the answer (product).  Feel free to practice multiplication facts by using ixl.com (skill area "Multiplication Skill Builder"). There are tons of multiplication games on this website under "Math links" for your child to practice! Our test will be next week.

In science, we are in deep into our forms of energy unit. We've examined sound energy (water glasses), light energy (radiometers) and heat/thermal energy (creating a solar oven). We will finish up our solar oven experiment on Monday (hopefully, we need a bright and sunny day). The kids will make smores using their solar ovens.

Enrichment Time - We got the chance to build and create with the new Lego We Do kits!  The kids sorted the new Lego kits. Then, built and programmed their Lego creation!

Class Happenings:
In writing, we have started our poetry unit. We wrote a free verse poem about a "stapler". The goal was to try and use "describing words and phrases".

In reading, we began our poetry unit. We explored a variety of poetry books with our table groups. We watched and discussed a few poetry books on Tumble Books. We started to learn some important poetry vocabulary (stanza, line, line break, rhythm, rhyming pattern). Lastly, we go a chance to read a couple of free verse poems and do an "I notice...." and "I can infer..." about a poem called, The Seed.

In math, we are in deep into multiplication!  The kids have learned to use number lines, arrays, charts/tables, and equal groups to represent a multiplication problem. • Xtramath - Great website for students to brush up on their math facts!  This will be perfect for   homework (math facts)!

  • Home Access Center: Make sure to start checking Home Access every week! Link to Home Access Center.
  • Wobble Stools  - Wobble stools are an alternative seating option for your child. Wobble stools help provide students with the ability to wiggle as they sit. They help some students to focus more on their work too. This is a parent purchased item. With that said, at the end of the year the wobble stool is yours. Your child can then use them in 4th and 5th grade. I would recommend the 18" or 20" stool (depending on your child's current height). The 14" stool is just too short. Here are a couple of websites of where to make this purchase if you are interested. Really Good Stuff - Wobble Stool  and Active Learning Stool - Amazon.com

Upcoming Dates:
  • October 10th - No School Day - Fall Parents/Student/Teacher Conferences
  • October 11th - Science Test - Changes in Matter and Mixtures

Class Happenings:
In writing, we worked on launching our PBL project.  We will start poetry next week.

In reading, we continue to learn many different reading strategies in which to help us as better understand the text we are reading.  The students completed a Character Trait worksheet with their reading partner on a book they read together. We also go logged onto iStation and took the pre-test. This is an online reading program. We will use this program from time to time throughout the year.

In math, we took our math test last Tuesday. The kids got a chance to see how they did today. We went over each problem on the math test as a class as well. We also started our next math unit - Multiplication. The kids will learn many ways in which to solve a multiplication problem. So far we have practice the Equal Groups strategy (drawing out the groups or items) and Arrays (rows and columns). We've really only worked with multiplies of 5's and 10's at this point.  There are tons of multiplication games on this website under "Math links" for your child to practice!

In science, we are in deep with our Changes of Matter and Mixtures unit. We've done some work on STEMscopes (online science program) - reading passages on the topic with comprehension questions, completed a Web Surfing worksheet (going to 3 websites reading and finding information), and had fun doing an Investigation game. We also did a Birdseed Mixture Activity - looking at ways in which to separate the mixture (physical properties). Then, ended the week with some fun Mixture Stations in the common area. Test will be on Tuesday.

In social studies, the kids learned about being a good citizen and our rights and responsiblities using Brain Pop Jr and exploring on the iCivic website.
