  • Xtramath:  Congratulations to Effie, Aadi, Shlok and Maria. They have completed a section in Xtramath.  Nice work!  Students are strongly encouraged to practice their math facts using this program on a daily basis (about 10 minutes a day). I get weekly updates from Xtramath showing student progress.  I get a report from Xtramath every Sunday!  Kids can win certificates and prizes! 
  • Scholastic Book Orders: It is vital that your child read everyday for 20 - 30 minutes. September orders are due by TODAY! Place your orders online - Your Class Activation Code NP79X.  The link to order is HERE.   Order from any of the online flyers!  Thank you for all your amazing support!
  • Bluebonnet Book Program: Our class's goal for each student to read 5 books! The Bluebonnet Program goes until mid-January so we have plenty of time to read, read, read. So, let's get to it!

  • Math Superstars: This is an excellent source for keeping up with those math skills. Awards and prizes are given out to those students that complete the worksheet each week and turn it in. This will begin this Monday.  Math Superstars link is on the Welcome Page. 
  • Home Access Center: Check weekly to stay up to date on your child's academic progress. Link to Home Access Center.
  • Wobble Stools  - Wobble stools are an alternative desk seating option for your child. Wobble stools help provide students with the ability to wiggle as they sit. They help some students to focus more on their work too. This is a parent purchased item. With that said, at the end of the year the wobble stool is yours. Your child can then use them in 4th and 5th grade. What's Been Happening In Class?  
  • Writing: Personal Narrative Unit. We have written our rough drafts this week. We've also completed our revising (adding stronger words) and editing (remembering our punctuation, capitalization and spelling) on our rough drafts. We will write our final drafts on Monday. If your child brings his/her writing journal home, please look over their rough draft with them if they need additional assistance in revising/editing. Thank you!
  • Reading: We dove into reading comprehension strategies this week, specifically the Making Predictions, Visualization and Asking Questions strategies using books Charlotte's Web and The Stranger.
  • Math: Place Value, Rounding/Estimation, Addition/Subtraction Unit - this week our focus has been rounding/estimation, place value expanded form/standard form and addition using partial sums (breaking apart a number). Students can review these concepts by using the Math Links tab (Place Value and Rounding). 
  • Science: Our current science unit is Changes in Matter and Mixtures. The focus this week has been on changes in matter using our new vocabulary (melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation). Next week, we will focus on mixtures.   My hope is to have the test by this Friday, October 6. 
  • Social Studies: Columbus Day next week!

What's Been Happening In Class?  
  • Writing: Personal Narrative Unit. We began focusing on our one small moment we are going to use for our personal narrative (Exploding the Moment and Plot Diagram). 
  • Reading: We have been reading all about how our founding fathers created our country's constitution. Next week, we will dive into some reading comprehension strategies (inferencing, visualization and asking questions). 
  • Math: Place Value, Rounding/Estimation, Addition/Subtraction Unit - this week our focus has been on all the ways to represent a number (Place value blocks, expanded form, standard/numerical form, written/word form) and understanding what each digit's value is in a large number. For example: what is the value of the 5 digit in this number - 35,467? The answer: the 5 digit's value is 5,000. Next week, comparing numbers and rounding/estimation. Students can review these concepts by using the Math Links tab (Place Value and Rounding). 
  • Science: We wrapped up our Matter Unit - States of matter and their physical properties. Our next unit is Changes in Matter and Mixtures. We will start on Monday!  My hope is to have the test by Friday, October 6th. 
  • Social Studies: Freedom week - Making the Constitution, Lady Liberty, Old Glory.

What's Been Happening In Class?  
  • Writing: Personal Narrative Unit. Continued to explore Watermelon and Seed ideas. Chose a seed idea (small moment) for personal narrative and dug in using descriptive words (our 5 senses) to help paint a picture of this moment. 
  • Reading: We have been reading Bluebonnet Books in class!  As a class, we have read these books so far - Whoosh!  Ada's Violin and Follow The Moon Home. Kids have been going down to the library to take their bluebonnet quizzes over these books and more!  Quizzes can be retaken for a passing score as often as needed. It's recommended if a student doesn't pass a quiz the first time, to reread the book. We've also been working on how readers make connections in their reading (Text - Self, Text - Text and Text - World). Lastly, we did a nonfiction reading passage with questions on a current event (Hurricane Harvey). 
  • Math: Reviewed for our Data and Graphing Test and started our new unit which is Place Value with Addition and Subtraction. 
  • Science: Matter Unit - States of matter and their physical properties. Completed Matter Stations and used STEMscopes (our online science program). Test will be next week on Wednesday or Thursday. 
  • Social Studies: Growth Mindset - learning about how our brains grow the each mistake! We finished our Pop Up Growth Mindset Brains!

  • Thank you! Wow, our class showed some amazing support towards our fellow Texans and their struggle due to Hurricane Harvey. Thank you all for donating items this week. 
  • Xtramath: This is an excellent online program to help build your child's math fact fluency. Log in forms went home yesterday in Thursday folders. Please, "Enroll" your child using the code on his/her form. Students are strongly encouraged to practice their math facts using this program on a daily basis (about 10 minutes a day). I get weekly updates from Xtramath showing student progress. This will become one of the items your child can do for homework.   
  • Scholastic Book Orders: It is vital that your child read everyday for 20 - 30 minutes. Ideally, it would be best if you read with your child so that they can practice their fluency, articulation and comprehension skills.   • Writing: We started our Personal Narrative Unit. Generated ideas and learned the difference between a "Watermelon idea and a Seed idea". 
  • Reading: What do great readers do to understand what they have read? We stop and think about our reading often!  Students completed multiple "Stop & Jot" reading notes this week on a book of their choice. 
  • Math: Charts and Graph Unit - Pictographs, bar graphs, dot plots, tally charts and frequency charts. 2-3 digit addition and subtraction with multiple step problems.  Test on Tuesday.  
  • Science: We started our Matter Unit - States of matter and their physical properties 
  • Social Studies: Growth Mindset - learning about how our brains grow the each mistake!  ​

Announcements:
  • Project Lead the Way: New fun, interactive way to learn the Design Process. We completed our first module this week in Science using the Design Process. Our focus was on learning about "structure" and "function" and how they relate to all man-made things in our lives. The kids got the chance to be little engineers, where they planned, constructed and evaluated their structures. Did their structure perform the function that was intended? We will do a few more Project Lead the Way modules throughout the school year. 
  • Hurricane Harvey Relief Program - lead by Austin Relief: Help us support our fellow Texans by giving to help those people in need from the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. Bring in these items to our classroom. We need these items below create kits: Large plastic tub with lid, one small pillow, one thin blanket, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, comb, brush, deodorant, 2 wash cloths, 2 towels, 5 jars of baby food, wipes, Kleenex, 1 package of diapers, cloth duffel bag, and a note of encouragement.  
  • Scholastic Book Orders: It is vital that your child read everyday for 20 - 30 minutes. Ideally, it would be best if you read with your child so that they can practice their fluency, articulation and comprehension skills.
