Announcements: ​​
  • Great Field Trip:  We had a wonderful field trip on Monday. Great weather and learned a ton about the Westcave Preserve. Look for pictures below. 
  • Progress Report Cards:  Progress report grades are due next Friday, therefore your child's progress report card will be coming home on April 11th. 
  • Home Access Center: Check your child's academic progress every week. Link to Home Access Center.   If you still have trouble logging in please contact our school's front office.
  • STAAR Assessments May 13 and May 14:  They are just around the corner.  Want to help prepare your child at home?  Suggestions for math: khan academy (students have a login already or set one up for FREE) and my "Math Links" tab are excellent online resources your child has access to. You can also create your own subscription to ixl.com and create an account for your child. It's a great math resource!  Suggestions for reading: reading comprehension passages with questions and other reading comprehension skills. Check out the "Reading Links" tab for tons of great online resources.

What's Been Happening In Class?  
  • Writing: This week our focus was on grammar/conventions in writing. We learned more about "pronouns" and "subject - verb agreement". 
  • Reading:  We are deep into our Informational/Nonfiction Reading Unit. We are using a number of PBL resources for this unit. Materials may be articles from magazines, books, online sources, and videos. We started taking "notefacts" from these materials this week on our specific region or area this week. 
  • Math: Our current unit is Fractions (comparing fractions and equivalent fractions) and Perimeter/Measurement/Capacity. We started on Perimeter this week.  Additional practice can be found under "Math Links", Khan Academy or Prodigy. 
  • Science: Started our next unit, Environments, Ecosystems and Food Chains. We've learned a ton of new vocabulary (which is all in our Science notebooks),

Announcements: ​​
  • Field Trip Day:  Our Field Trip Day is on Monday, March 25 (the first day back from Spring Break). Please, have your child wear his/her Elsa England t-shirt (grey or pink), comfortable shoes for walking, sack lunch, water bottle, snack, hat (if its sunny). Sunscreen must be applied to your child before he/she comes to school in the morning. The only two students purchasing lunch from the cafeteria are: Ethan M and Bennett. Everyone else should be bringing a sack lunch from home. We will be leaving for the Westcave Preserve on a school bus at approximately 9:00am. We should return back to the school around 1:30pm (depending on traffic). Mrs. Weaver (Connor's mom) is our chaperone for this field trip. 
  • Report Cards: Please, return your child's report card envelope and one "signed" report card. Thank you!

What's Been Happening In Class?  
  • Writing: This week our focus was on working on our PBL research project. Each student has chose a specific region or area to learn more about. Our driving question we are all focusing on for our PBL project is "How can we educate others to reduce trash/pollution, prevent further habitat loss, and conserve our natural resources?" Ask your child which region or area they have chosen!
  • Reading:  We are deep into our Informational/Nonfiction Reading Unit. We are using a number of PBL resources for this unit. Materials may be articles from magazines, books, online sources, and videos. We started taking "notefacts" from these materials this week on our specific region or area this week. 
  • Math: Our current unit is Fractions (comparing fractions and equivalent fractions). Additional practice can be found under "Math Links", Khan Academy or Prodigy. 
  • Science: We wrapped up our Space Unit yesterday with our unit test. Scores are in Home Access. 
  • Social Studies: We wrapped up our economics unit with the Economics Fair on Tuesday and a reflection sheet.

Weekly Update #27: March 4 - March 8

Announcements: ​​
  • Economics Fair: It's this Tuesday!  Only 3 more days left!!  Please, help your child in making sure they have their 35 - 40 product items made for Tuesday morning. Students should bring their products, a small amount of change to purchase other items at the fair (ziplock baggie of quarters), and wear their Elsa England T-Shirt (grey or pink) on Tuesday morning. We will begin setting up for the Economics Fair just before 8:00am. We are asking that parents do not stay for the Economics Fair. Elsa England has well over 1,200 students, and its just too hard to accommodate parents. I will take pictures and post them on the Weekly Update for you. Click here for the Economics Fair Flyer 
  • Field Trip Forms: Two green field trip forms came home 2 weeks ago. Please, take a moment to fill them out and return by March 11th.  
  • Libraries of Love: All of first grade is excited to be a part of a service learning opportunity called Libraries of Love. Important information about the project was sent home today with your child! First grade is collecting money to help create libraries in Uganda. They will also be hosting a Walk-a-thon on March 14th. Students can walk with a new, hardcover book and read it with their buddy before donating it to a good cause! Record Sheet was in Thursday folders yesterday. It's due back on March 13th.

What's Been Happening In Class?  
  • Writing: This week our focus was on working on our "revising" skills. We worked on 3 different passages looking for revising errors (adding or deleting sentences, rearranging sentences, combining sentences). We had our Revising/Editing DCA yesterday. Scores will be posted this weekend. 
  • Reading:  We are deep into our Informational/Nonfiction Reading Unit. We are using a number of PBL resources for this unit. Materials may be articles from magazines, books, online sources, and videos. We'll begin taking "notefacts" from these materials as we research our PBL project. 
  • Math: Our current unit is Fractions (comparing fractions and equivalent fractions). Additional practice can be found under "Math Links", Khan Academy or Prodigy. 
  • Science: We are in our Space unit. This week our focus was on the planets in our solar system. The kids researched each planet with a partner. We'll finish this research up next week. Our unit DCA will be on March 14th. 
  • Social Studies: In our Economics unit we focused on advertising. We created our posters for the Economics Fair. We'll finish these posters up on  Monday so they are ready for the fair on Tuesday.

Announcements: ​​
  • Thank you: A BIG thank you to Manasvi's parents, Sudeep's parents, Ethan H.'s parents, Ethan M's parents, Connor's parents and Sophia's parents for donating supplies to our classroom!!!  We greatly appreciate it. We are well stocked full of supplies again! 
  • Field Trip Forms: Two green field trip forms came home yesterday in Thursday folders. Please, take a moment to fill them out and return by March 11th.  
  • Economics Fair Information:  Only 1 more week until the Economics Fair! Students are required to make 35 - 40 product items, so please have your child start making their products.  Please, refer to the "yellow" sheet for requirements and expectations. Products are due and need to come to school on March 12th.

What's Been Happening In Class?  
  • Writing: This week our focus was on working on our "editing" skills. We worked on 3 different passages looking for editing errors (spelling, capitalization, punctuation, using correct verb tense, etc). Next week we'll work on "revising" skills, and follow it up with a DCA Test on March 7.
  • Reading:  We started our next unit - Informational/Nonfiction Reading. We are using a number of PBL resources for this unit. Materials may be articles from magazines, books, online sources, and videos. We'll begin taking "notefacts" from these materials as we research our PBL project. 
  • Math: Our next math unit is Fractions (comparing fractions and equivalent fractions). Additional practice can be found under "Math Links", Khan Academy or Prodigy. 
  • Science: We started our next Science unit - Space!  We spent this week looking specifically at the sun, earth and moon. New vocabulary: orbit, rotation, revolution, day, night, axis, model, sun, earth and moon.
  • Social Studies: We learned about scarcity and availability of products (supply) and how the demand can can effect the cost of the product or service.
