What's Been Happening In Class?
  • Writing: This week our focus was on grammar and conventions using a mentor sentence from the book The Man Who Walked Between The Towers. We are starting to practice our editing/revising skills as we prepare for the Editing/Revising DCA Test which will be in March. This week our focus was to find conjunctions in sentences and punctuation/capitalization errors in a sentence.
  • Reading:  We are in deep with Traditional Literature!  We continue to read folktales finding story elements (characters, setting, plot, problem, solution), the theme (lesson/moral) of the story, and the main events in the story. Specifically we read some funny Tall Tales (Swamp Angel, Paul Bunyan). We learned that Tall Tales use tons of hyperboles (extreme exaggerations) which make the stories funny and unbelievable. Next week, we'll continue with more Tall Tales and get into Legends and Myths.
  • Math: We are wrapping up the Geometry unit. This week the focus has been on "finding the area" of a rectangle/square or other polygon shape. We are using multiplication to find the area (length X width). Plus, we reviewed 3D shapes and familiar vocabulary (edges, faces, vertices). Specifically, we identified what makes a 3D shape a polyhedron, a prism, and a pyramid. The Geometry DCA test will be combined with the next unit (more multiplication and division). This DCA test will later in February. Date to be set soon.
  • Science: We wrapped up our Soils and Natural Resources unit yesterday with our DCA test. We did 2 fun Kahoot reviews before the test. The kids love Kahoots! Our next unit is Weather/Climate.
  • Social Studies: We've started our Economics Unit lessons. This week our focus was on Needs vs Wants.
  • Eslot: Enrichment groups (cooking, arts & crafts, Lego Robotics, coding, STEAM, Nintendo Labo)

What's Been Happening In Class?
  • Writing: This week our focus was on the One Little Word project. Students decided on one word they wanted to "live by" this year. Then, we wrote about our word, giving the reasons why we chose this word. Lastly, we created a collage with our picture, our written reasons for our word choice, and clippings from magazines and/or images from online. Our posters will be on display in our classroom as our constant reminder of our one little word. :)
  • Reading:  We are deep into our Nonfiction Unit in Reading. We got into Biography Book Club groups. We've been reading and taking down note facts about our person. We just finished chapter 5 today in class. We'll wrap up the book next week and also create a Biography Google Presentation using all of our notes we have collected. There will also be a Reading DCA Test (nonfiction) next Friday.
  • Math: We started our next unit: Geometry. We've reviewed tons of vocabulary that was taught in second grade, but we must review in third grade before moving forward. These words were: polygon, two dimensional shapes, open vs closed shape, sides, vertices, triangle, quadrilateral, square, rectangle, rhombus, parallel, parallelogram, pentagon, hexagon, congruent, similar. Next week, we'll continue with trapezoids, 3D shapes, edges, faces....
  • Science: We started our next unit: soils and natural resources. We briefly discussed what makes up soil and why it is important with a fun soil study activity.
  • Social Studies: We reviewed our class's social contract. We created a new one for 2019 with a list of consequences too. The kids created both the contract and the consequences list. Pictures are below.
  • Eslot: Kinder Buddy Activity
